Hoi Polloi announces a remount of ouracclaimed stage adaptation of John Cassavetes’ collaboratively-created film,Shadows, considered a watershed in the birth of American independent cinema. Performances are at JACK, the new performance venue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

Under the direction of Alec Duffy (Three Pianos, All Hands), Hoi Polloi turns JACK into a raucous apartment party for this immersive theatrical experience. Originally released in 1959, the film depicts lean and hungry artists during the Beat Generation years in New York City, offering an unsparing view of racial and sexual conflict at the height of the Eisenhower era.

The production features a host of Off-Off Broadway heavies, with music by Rick Burkhardt of The Nonsense Company, set design by Andreea Mincic (Three Pianos), costume design by Becky Lasky and a cast that includes Jason Quarles, Julian Rozzell, Jr., Burkhardt, Alexandra Miller, Ike Ufomadu, Dustin Fontaine, B. Brian Argotsinger, Paul Perroni and Samantha Debicki, with music performed by Burkhardt/Emile Blondel (piano), Steven Leffue (saxophone) and Ezra Gale/James Ilgenfritz (double bass).

All performances at 8 pm

OBIE-winning theater company Hoi Polloi, the resident company of JACK, inaugurates the space this summer with a production of BAAL, the first play by Bertolt Brecht. Helmed by Artistic Director Alec Duffy, BAAL is about a performance poet on a self-destructive tear.

July 12 - August 5, Thursdays through Sundays at 8 pm.

Location: JACK, 505 1/2 Waverly Ave between Fulton and Atlantic, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. C or G train to Clinton-Washington.

Performances are pay-what-you-can at the door, with no advance reservations possible.

The seven-actor ensemble features Jason Quarles, Julian Rozzell, Jr., Lori Parquet, Nikaury Rodriguez, Ike Ufomadu, B. Brian Argotsinger and Catherine Decioccio. OBIE-winner Mimi Lien designs the set, Amith Chandrashaker designs lights and Steven Leffue composes.

A new step for Hoi Polloi

We are opening a performance space, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn! The space is called JACK — named after Artistic Director Alec Duffy’s grandfather, Jack Duffy, who combined a passion for community (in his work as a minister) with a deep love of theater. The site is a former garage, right around the corner from the Clinton-Washington stop on the C train, at 507 Waverly Ave between Fulton and Atlantic. JACK will serve as a home for Hoi Polloi, but also for other theater companies, musicians and artists. We’ll open in May and have our first production in July. More details soon…
